FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is a Doula ?
The word Doula originates from the ancient Greek and literally means “handmaiden”. Nowadays
it is generally used to refer to a woman who helps other women particularly before, during
and after giving birth. In the past this woman could have been a Mother a Sister or an
Aunt, but due to changes in society many new mothers find they have no relatives close by
or if the do they are unable to help for various reasons. Hence they hire
a Doula.
Are Doulas Qualified ?
Personally I feel it is important that you are trained to know where your job begins and ends.
As with most Doulas in the U.K I have undertaken a course recognised by Doula U.K.
However I also feel that the best Training you can have as a Doula is to have given
birth and raised children yourself.
Life is a constant learning curve and I like to think that doing the course was just the
beginning of a journey that I will travel with lots of Mothers gaining knowledge and making
friends along the way.
I will offer help and support within my remit and if I don’t know the answer will point you
in the direction of someone who does.
